Historical Events of Surat

1194 Kutb-Ud-Din Aibak (General of Shahab-Ud-Din Ghori) raided Rander & Surat.
1225 Arabs of Kufa settled in Rander.
1373 Muhammed Tughlak sacked and plundered Surat.
1391 Mastic Khan was appointed Governor of Surat and Rander.
1512 Portuguese plundered and burnt Surat.
1514 Barbosa visited Surat.
1546 Khudavand Khan ( Safi Agha Turk of Raomi ) completed the construction of Castle of Surat.
1573 Akbar marched on Surat and laid a seize.
1608 First English ship arrived at the mouth of Tapi (Surat).
1612 Fight occurred between English and Portuguese at the mouth of river Tapi.
1615 Sir Thomas Roc reached Surat.
1616 Dutch were given provisional permission to establish factory.

1860 Surat Railway station was build.
1865 Surat City was surveyed for the first time. Road build from Chowk Bazar to Surat railway station.
1870 Gandhi Baug was opened for the general public.
1877 Hope Bridge was opened for the general public.
1883 Saturday Market started for the first time near fort.
1955 Rangupvan Hall was inaugurated by Prime minister Shri Jawarharlal Nehru.
1966 Nehru Bridge was inaugurated.

Surat has a  tropical savanna climate  ( Köppen : Aw), moderated strongly by the Sea to the Gulf of Cambay. The summer begins in early March and lasts until June. April and May are the hottest months, the average maximum temperature being 37 °C (99 °F).  Monsoon  begins in late June and the city receives about 1,200 millimetres (47 in) of rain by the end of September, with the average maximum being 32 °C (90 °F) during those months.  October and November see the retreat of the monsoon and a return of high temperatures until late November. Surat Brief

The city of Surat has glorious history that dates back to 300 BC. The origin of the city can be traced to the old Hindu town of Suryapur during 1500 – 1520 A.D., which was later colonised by the Brigus or the King from Sauvira on the banks of River Tapi. In 1759, The British rulers took its control from the Mughals till the beginning of the 20th century. The city is located on the River Tapi and has about 6 km long coastal belt along the Arabian Sea. Due to these reasons, the city emerged as an important trade centre and enjoyed prosperity through sea trade in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Surat became the most important trade link between India and many other countries and was at the height of prosperity till the rise of Bombay port in the 17th and 18th centuries. Economy Surat ranked 10th in India with a GDP of 2.60 lakh crore in fiscal year 2016 ($37 billion in 2016). This industry earns India about US$10 billion in annual exports. A legacy of old Dutch trade links, it began after a Surti entrepreneur returned from East Africa bringing diamond cutters.
